This product can be used as a monitoring tool for large scale structures in the aircraft and aerospace industry, civil and infrastructure industry as well as in the oil industry

 PROBLEMS ADDRESSED:

Structural health monitoring of structures is imperative for the longitivity of these structures and to avoid any mishaps. The existing methods are expensive, time-consuming, highly invasive and suitable only for smaller structures. There is an increasing need for non-invasive evaluation techniques to detect internal damages in larger laminated composites. Researchers at the University of Delaware have developed a feasible solution for this problem.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION:

This invention is a carbon nanotube based composite sensing system for distributed structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation of large scale solid structural bodies such as bridges, airplane wings, or oil wells. The electrical properties of these carbon nanotube integrated sensing systems are exploited using standard measurement techniques in a novel way. These sensors can be used for in-situ or ex-situ sensing and can detect any damage or deformation.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT:

This technology is ready for deployment, but may need additional minor optimization depending on the specific field of use.
